Questions
What schools ask before they choose Akshara
Plain answers to the questions we hear most. Something else on your mind? Call us, or ask for a demo and ask it there.
Is Akshara for schools only, or for colleges too?
Both. Schools run classes and sections through the academic year; colleges add faculties, programs and terms or semesters. Each school switches on only the parts it uses, so nobody wades through screens meant for someone else.
Can we keep our data on our own server?
Yes. Akshara runs in our cloud, where we host and look after it for you, or on your school’s own server. Either way, each school has a database of its own.
Does it work in Bikram Sambat?
Yes. Dates, months, the academic calendar, invoices, attendance and payroll all run in Bikram Sambat, with the month names your school uses. A school that keeps AD dates can use AD instead.
Does it handle terminal exams and GPA?
Yes. Name your exams the way you run them — unit tests, first and second terminals, the final — and say how they add up. Marks become letter grades and GPA on your school’s own scale, and report cards print in your design, on your letterhead.
How do parents pay fees online?
From the parents’ pages on the website or in the Akshara app, with the e-wallets and bank accounts your school accepts. Each payment is checked with the payment gateway until it settles; then the invoice is marked paid and the receipt is ready.
Is there a phone app?
Yes — the Akshara app for parents and teachers, on Android phones. Parents follow attendance, homework, results, fees, the school bus and notices for each child; teachers take attendance, enter marks, give homework and see their payslips. The app wears your school’s name, crest and colours.
Can teachers punch in from their phones?
No, on purpose. A phone can be anywhere, so staff attendance comes from the school’s biometric devices, or is recorded by the office. Someone who missed a punch asks for it to be added, and it is approved like leave.
How do we move from spreadsheets or another system?
We set up your classes, fees and staff with you, and the opening balances let your books start where the old ones stopped. You can start in the middle of a year: leave balances and accounts both carry over.
Is our data safe?
Each school has its own database. People see only what their role allows, down to each action; two-step sign-in with an authenticator app or a passkey can be required; sensitive changes can need a second person’s approval; and every change is logged with who made it and what it was before.
Can people sign in without remembering a password?
Yes. Besides the password, people can sign in with a one-time code sent to their email; on a computer with a passkey; and in the app with their fingerprint or face. Two-step sign-in is still asked wherever the school requires it.
Does it have an AI assistant?
Yes, if your school switches it on. It answers questions about your school’s own data — only what each person is allowed to see — and explains how to do things, step by step, for every page of the app. Your school chooses which AI service it uses.
Our school is VAT-registered. Can Akshara do VAT bills?
Yes. Most schools never need it, so it stays out of sight; for a VAT-registered school we switch it on, and its VAT bills are numbered in one unbroken series and reported to IRD.
What does Akshara cost?
It depends on the parts of Akshara you use and how you run it — in our cloud or on your own server. Tell us about your school and we will send a quote.
Who makes and supports Akshara?
Akshara Labs Pvt. Ltd., a software company in Chandragiri, Kathmandu. We build Akshara, host it for schools in our cloud, and support the schools that use it.
